Scouting America Troop 199
Troop 199 is part of the Greater Colorado Council and is sponsored by St. John’s Lutheran Church at Washington Park in Denver. The troop has both a boys program and a girl’s program.
This troop is best known as Denver’s “high adventure troop,” with a fantastic program of camping, backpacking, canoeing, skiing, cycling, rafting and more.
Some examples of troop activities are:
Annual weekend ski trips, alpine and cross country
Annual fly fishing merit badge campout
Multi-day summer treks at Philmont Ranch
Canada multi-day canoe trips
Camp Alexander Scout Camp in Lake George, CO
Snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park
Annual hikes to summits of “14ers”
Leadership training
Sea Base aquatic adventure in Islamorada, Florida
Troop 199 was founded by Ken Maetzold with eight initial scouts in 1953, and has been a feature of the Washington Park neighborhood at St. Johns Church location since its founding.
As of October 2024, total of 175 Eagle Scouts have come from this troop since its founding in 1953. A list of Troop 199 Eagle Scouts can be found here!
